Chuang Yen Monastery
October 24 – Sixth grade visited the Chuang Yen Monastery in Carmel, New York, a Chinese Buddhist monastery run by the Buddhist Association of the United States.
This trip coincides with the sixth grade study of Ancient China, which includes the origins of Buddhism.
Students were given a tour of the 200-acre campus, which included a visit to the Great Buddha Hall that houses the largest statue of Buddha in the Western Hemisphere. Students also learned about the history of Siddhartha Gautama, meditated in Kuan-Yin Hall, and discussed the differences between Buddhist practices in various countries in Asia.
“I was most impressed with the amount of knowledge that our students arrived with," Head of Upper Campus Matt Hall said. "And their ability to engage with our tour guide!”
